HEALTH & WELLNESS – Our Medical Center’s nine doctors and 21 specialty clinics offer a full range of services and a $16.5 million dollar expansion of the surgery, outpatient clinics, lab, radiology, birthing center helps enhance our medical area. The Petersen Family Wellness Center includes a pool, resistance pool, hot tub, basketball court, racquetball and an adjoining state-of-the physical therapy area. The County was identified as one of Iowa’s healthiest in 2013 and is vying to become an Iowa Blue Zone® community in 2015.

EDUCATION – Our students test in the top percentiles, has a U.S. Department of Education 1013-15 National Blue Ribbon School award and also have unprecedented success in marching band, jazz band, FFA, STEM and mock trial as well as 27 athletic state championships. In 2014 over 70% of the graduates were attending post-secondary study and had access to over $200,000 in local scholarships. Students not only excel at in-state schools but also have students who attended Baylor, Cornell, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Rice and Stanford.

The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton, Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla (IKM)-Manning and Shelby County Catholic School also provide excellent educational opportunities. Iowa Western Community College’s Harlan attendance center is equipped with the latest classroom technology and recently added a $500,000 chemistry lab.
